About

Shell Global Insights is an internal web platform designed for Shell’s global market research data and insights. As the lead UX and visual designer on this project, my task was to translate the comprehensive research data into a user-friendly digital format on the web.

Project Details

Problem Definition

Shell conducted worldwide market research to study customers’ behaviors to get insights on driving the sales of their product. The research was conducted in several markets around the world, each market has a number of categories of data. All the data was put in tables and long paragraphs which are not easy to read or navigate through.

Design Criteria

  • The platform needs to be easy to revisit and share

  • Data needs to be easy to read and understand

  • Categories and markets navigator needs to be clear

  • Secure - the site needs to require a login with internal emails

  • The design needs to match Shell’s brand identity

Ideation

After a few initial conversations with the clients, we decided on creating a website - a platform that is easy to use, and simple to build and update. I started with organizing the information architecture of the site, below shows an example of the user flow for the Chinese market.

Sitemap

There are 4 primary layers of information in the hierarchy of the site - market, research category, customer type, and detailed data. To ensure easy navigation through the layers, I decided to use a fixed sidebar layout along with a horizontal on-page navigation for the long detailed pages.

Visual Design

The UI of the site uses Shell’s signature yellow as the primary theme color with a touch of red. We also develop different theme colors for each market to add a little diversity of colors. Below shows the final visual design of a few main pages, the original data was modified for confidentiality reasons.
